Boosting Voter Turnout in Arab Society

Standing Together will  increase voter turnout within Arab-Palestinian society in Israel by positioning bereaved families and victims of violence and crime as central figures in the call to vote. The strategy operates on two levels.

  • Firstly, Standing Together will use a comprehensive social media and advertising campaign linking community commitment and solidarity with bereaved families to the civic duty of voting to increase turnout in Arab-Palestinian communities.   We  expose 1.5 million people in Arab society to the campaign’s core messages.
  • Secondly, Standing Together will organize a massive "Get Out The Vote" (GOTV) campaign specifically targeting Arab youth and women during the week of the elections and on Election Day itself. By increasing turnout from this important sector of Israeli society, we hope to help ensure fair, democratic, and equal Knesset elections in 2026.   We aim to enlisting and training 1,000 community leaders, all of whom are members of bereaved families, personally engage 200,000 young people and women, and indirectly mobilize 300,000 more through WhatsApp in the week leading up to the elections.

THE FACTS: Voter turnout among Arab citizens in Israel has historically been characterized by a low turnout in national elections as compared to local elections. In fact, turnout in national elections have faced a volatile decline, fluctuating between a record high of 64.8% in 2020 and a historic low of 44.6% in 2021. This persistent participation gap in national elections—which stood at 53.2% in the most recent 2022 cycle—is largely rooted in systemic political alienation, a perceived lack of parliamentary efficacy, and a sense of "second-class" citizenship that leads many to view the Knesset as disconnected from their immediate safety and civil needs. In this context, the upcoming 2026 election represents a critical strategic juncture; the unification of the Joint List and the widespread feeling that existing parties have failed to take action to address the crisis of violence in crime in the Arab community, Arab voters have the opportunity to turn from a marginalized electorate into a decisive, "kingmaker" political force. On the other hand, these opportunities are challenged by the Israeli Right’s longstanding efforts to dissuade Arabs from voting and entrenched skepticism of the Israeli political system.
