Declaring that Israel faces a historic crossroads, Commanders for Israel’s Security has
launched a campaign to inform decision makers, the Israeli public and the world Jewish
community about the nation’s options and the path it must choose. “We have two
possible paths" said CIS Chair, Major General (Res.) Matan Vilnai (former IDF Deputy
Chief of Staff). "We can continue the current slide towards annexation, in pursuit of a
Messianic pipe dream, leading unavoidably to a dystopian one-state, non-democratic,
non-Jewish, insecure pariah reality, or we can opt to correct course and return to the
Zionist vision reflected in the Declaration of Independence, pursue security and
economic cooperation with the states and peoples of the region, and free Israel from
control of millions of Palestinians - the only way to ensure a secure, democratic and
Jewish state. The events of and since 10/7 have made this choice no longer avoidable,
and at the same time have created the conditions for realizing the second – true Zionist
– vision."
The Campaign – "Security First" - seeks to inform Israelis about the critical decision
they must make. It argues that the Israeli leadership must work to integrate Israel into a
regional coalition that will ensure that Israelis, Palestinians, and the citizens of Middle
East nations live together in security, peace and prosperity. And that, in this context, it
must pursue a policy of civil separation from the Palestinians, a set of moves designed
as a critical and practical step towards a future permanent accord, enhancing
Palestinian self-determination and empowerment, and improved mutual confidence.
Separation should include such steps as further deepening security cooperation,
expanding contiguous PA territorial control, removing illegal and far-out Jewish
settlements, reopening access to Palestinian employment in Israel, curbing Jewish
violence, and releasing Palestinian Authority funds held by Israel, all while maintaining
overall Israeli security authority, in the interim.
“We are reaching out beyond Israel, to American and other Western decision makers
and to Arab leaders in the region; and most importantly, to the world Jewish
community," said Executive Committee member Nimrod Novik (former Senior Policy
Advisor to the Prime Minister), "because we believe that world Jewry and Israel are
each other’s most essential - indeed existential - allies.” Commanders for Israel’s
Security affirms: “Israel was founded as the homeland of the entire Jewish people, and
its Declaration of Independence recognizes the essential role of diaspora Jewry in
shaping our collective destiny.”
Who are Commanders for Israel’s Security:
Commanders for Israel’s Security is a non-partisan movement of over 550 former
senior officers and officials of the IDF, Mossad, Shin Bet (internal security), Israel Police
and Foreign Service, committed to the Zionist vision of a secure, democratic Israel with
a solid Jewish majority for generations, in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence.
CIS’ hundreds of members share the view that achieving this national goal requires
separation from millions of Palestinians, ultimately through a negotiated ‘two states for
two peoples’ agreement and its implementation within a regional framework.
